It is becoming a Flat Tuesdays tradition to help kick off Homecoming at UMBC by welcoming all of the wonderful faculty and staff to join us for some casual conversation, laughter, and even a little live music in our very own French Quarter.  The winners of the annual office decorating competition will also be announced! Light hors d’oeuvres will be served and a wide variety of alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages will be available for purchase. Poetry Slam_SquareBig Prize Poetry SLAM!
6-8 p.m., Performing Arts and Humanities Building Atrium

Slam BIG and Win BIG at the second annual Poetry Slam hosted by the English Department.

Last year’s slam was a standing-room-only success. A 1st prize of $200 will go to the winner of this dazzling high-energy slam. 2nd and 3rd prizes, too, for students and alumni sharing their original work, judged by students, alumni, faculty and staff. Help us put the performing in the new Performing Arts and Humanities Building! To participate in the slam, submit a print and video version of no more than five minutes of original poetry to HomecomingSlam@gmail.com by 9/17/13. Entries will be judged on their poetic effects, compelling content and on video performance. All UMBC students and alumni are eligible.

The 5th annual trot around the Loop, named for the late men’s track alumnus Rob Magin ’92, kicks off Saturday’s Homecoming festivities. Enjoy the early morning air and get a closer look at different parts of the UMBC campus. Free t-shirt to all paid entrants. A fun walk/run is scheduled prior to the start of the 5K. R, $

Catch Retriever Fever while enjoying a delicious barbecue lunch with friends at the center of campus. There will be something for everyone at this picnic lunch including inflatable games, carnival booths with prizes, face painters, balloon twisters, raffles, giveaways and much more. A Q&A with Dr. Hrabowski and Tim Hall, our new Director of Athletics, Physical Education and Recreation will begin around noon.  We will also provide live entertainment. Register by Monday, September 23 for a discounted rate of $10 p/p; free for children 11 and under. After September 23, registration fees will increase to $15 p/p. R, $

Tour of Baltimore with the Shriver Center [CANCELLED]
1:30 – 5 p.m., Bus departs Commons Circle Drive

Come join us for a unique afternoon tour of Baltimore—exploring largely unknown sites of local peace and justice history, while learning about the complex urban issues that Shriver Center students and alumni have been engaging for 20 years through participation in our service programs.  We’ll get off the beaten path and hear stories of everyday people who have struggled for social change.  The tour will be led by Dr. Joby Taylor, Director of the Shriver Peaceworker Program; there will be several stops, with only moderate walking. Bring your open eyes, ears, and minds–and comfortable shoes–and let’s go explore the City together! Space is limited to 27 people and registration is required. R

NOTE: This event has sold out, and due to inclement weather, will be moved to the Skylight Room.

It’s not a party without delicious crabs, great friends, and entertainment. Back by popular demand, this Crab Feast includes an all-you-can-eat buffet including Maryland blue crabs; homemade Maryland crab and cream of crab soups; beef, turkey, and ham carving stations; BBQ chicken, Italian sausage, pulled pork, baked ziti, corn on the cob, potato salad and much more. A cash bar will also be available. There will also be a live performance by Black Falls, a blues and classic rock band featuring alumnus Philip Medenbach, Jr. ’87. Get your tickets by Monday, September 23, for a discounted rate of $40 per person and $20 per child aged 4-11. After September 23, registration will increase to $45 per person and $20 per child. This isn’t your traditional stand-up comedy – you’ll hear everything from his ridiculous tips for college students to some of his hilarious stories and songs. Because a good time at UMBC knew no boundaries!  Whether you partied at the UC Ballroom, Commuter Cafeteria, Patapsco Rec Room, Octoberfest, Quadmania or the RATT, a funky good time was always had. Join us as DJ Rusty V, DJ Romeo, and DJ Neal Conway throwback on the wheels of steel and remind us how we do it! Online registration fee of $10 includes heavy hors d’oeuvres. Register online by Tuesday, October 1 and receive  a complimentary drink ticket. Registration will be $20 at the door.
